![]() ![]() When I read in this fashion, I begin to feel less like “a stranger in a strange land” and more like a native and next-of-kin to the godly men and women I thus encounter. I have found that as I try to understand - through study, prayer, and application - what the scriptures might have meant to those for whom they were originally written, I begin to see myself and my current situation differently. Perhaps the most important answer to this question for me is this: I need to lay aside the outlook, expectations, and preoccupations of the present world in order to experience the world of the sacred, a world that is “very distant from our own.” Why should the book of Psalms be read as an ancient work? I will show how this story can be applied in the lives of the priest-king, the Messiah, and each one of the faithful.Ī detailed commentary of Psalm 23 will then be given, followed by final reflections. I will then explain how Psalm 23 functions as a crucial piece of a larger story within the book of Psalms as a whole.
